Summary:
Canon mp480 - detected, not quite working

Detailed description
I installed sane-backends-1.0.19 a) from the ubuntu repository and b) from source (as a download); the mp480 wasn't properly detected, despite the release notes on http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html

reubenf@fridge:~/Desktop$ sane-find-scanner

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x1731) at libusb:002:007

# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

reubenf@fridge:~/Desktop$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,

Those release notes are for the CVS (development) version of sane, not v1.0.19. Make sure you are running a CVS snapshot.

I don't get it. The web page refers to 1.0.18-cvs; shouldn't 1.0.19 (which I installed) supersede 1.0.18-cvs?

In any case, I installed from cvs to see if it made a difference, but unfortunately, same deal.

MP480 is a recent model, thus not supported by Sane 1.0.18
or 1.0.19.

MP480 is however supported by current Sane CVS, as reported
here:
http://mp610.blogspot.com/2008/04/give-your-scanner-new-freshly-sane.html?showComment=1231095720000#c4926925607864675873

So probably something went wrong while installing Sane CVS,
or maybe some USB detection issues.

I've written some guidelines on how to install Sane CVS,
could you double check the installation, especially in which
directories the installation has been done. The post can be
found here:
