Summary:
Xsane will not scan complete document in "lineart" mode

Detailed description
Ubuntu 16.04.1
Xsane .999
Scanner is All-in-1 HP Photosmart 6520
Scanning function operates normally when the scan mode in the main window is set at either Color or Gray. With scan mode at Lineart, the "Preview" function shows the complete document, but when "Scan" is selected the scan bar travels a very short distance and returns to its normal docking position. The resultant image shows only the top 5-10% of the document. The window left of the "Scan" button, showing the size of the image, always shows 1MB for the Lineart scan, but 24 MB for a Color scan (either PNG or JPEG).

Output of:
$ hp-scan -m lineart -r 100 -o tempa.png
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.16.3)
Scan Utility ver. 2.2

Does this same problem happen with the scanimage command line tool? If so, the issue is likely in the hplip software, which the sane team does not produce.

If the issue only happens with Xsane, then it is likely a problem in that software, which is also not produced by the sane team.

"Does this same problem happen with the scanimage command line tool? If so, the issue is likely in the hplip software, which the sane team does not produce."

Ans: What is “the scanimage command line tool”? Using the terminal in Ubuntu, and the following command, the HP scanner successfully scans documents in color, gray, or lineart mode:
$ scanimage -d hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_6520_series?serial=TH32B1109805TZ --resolution 300 --mode lineart -x 215 -y 295 > scan22.pbm

"If the issue only happens with Xsane, then it is likely a problem in that software, which is also not produced by the sane team."

Ans: Could you please tell me where I should direct my bug report?

Bill
