Tevion MD9458 detected incorrectly and fails with an error

Detailed description
model: Tevion MD9458 (a device made by Medion)

windows driver:http://treiberupdate.de/treiber-download/download-36785-treiber-Medion-MedionTreiberSoftware(MD9458).html

sane-find-scanner:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x05d8, product=0x4002, chip=GT-6801) at libusb:003:018

canimage -L:
device `gt68xx:libusb:003:014' is a Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU flatbed scanner

scanimage:
scanimage: open of device gt68xx:libusb:003:014 failed: Invalid argument

i got rid of the missing firmware message by following this tutorial http://www.pc-erfahrung.de/linux/md9458unterlinux.html but the firmware file in the driver could be extracted with standard tools and was named Artec48.usb

tested with current tarball and current ubuntu repository version.

the led doesnt switch on and no reaction from the device despite being detectable on usb

Followups: Sort comments antichronologically

Thanks for the report.

Could differences in the firmware file be causing this?

Would you be able to provide the log produced by

SANE_DEBUG_GT68XX=10 SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=5 scanimage

and a copy of the gt68xx.conf file you used?
